Tartans Host Invitational, Place Second

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team hosted its annual Mini Invitational on Saturday, March 23. The Tartans placed second in the event after scoring 206 points with John Carrol University taking first with 242 points. 

On Friday night, senior Alexa Barriero (Middletown, N.J. / Middletown North) threw a second-place distance of 38.47 meters in the hammer throw. Sophomore Alessandra Tully (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) took fifth in the event after tossing the hammer 38.47 meters. Barriero placed second in the javelin on Saturday with a throw of 35.18 meters. Tully then placed second in the shot put with a toss of 9.71 meters on Saturday. Freshman Lindy Cornwall (Poway, Calif. / Poway) placed second in the discus with a toss of 39.34 meters.  

Senior Autumn Hair (Blue Bell, Pa. / Wissahickon) took fourth in the long jump with 4.79 meters, while freshman Sami Johnson (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Thousand Oaks) took sixth with 4.70 meters. Senior Tessa Allen (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Bishop Montgomery) placed second in the high jump clearing 1.57 meters. Allen also took second in the triple jump with 11.11 meters, and Hair took third with 10.22 meters.

The Tartans swept the pole vault, as junior Joanna Baranowski (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) placed first clearing 3.18 meters, sophomore Enza Potter (Los Gatos, Calif. / Saint Francis) took second clearing 3.03 meters, freshman Visakha Ho (Rolla, Mo. / Rolla) placed third with 2.58 meters, and freshman Ashley Zhang (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) finished fourth clearing 2.43 meters. Baranowski also won the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:08.24. 

In the 4x100-meter relay, the Tartans took second with a team of Hair, junior Leah Kendrick (Doylestown, Pa. / Central Bucks East), sophomore Valerie Reiling (Concord, Mass. / Concord Carlisle Regional), and senior Debarati Bhanja (New Albany, Ohio / New Albany) in a time of 50.30. Kendrick won the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.54. Bhanja also won the 400-meter race in a time of 59.07. 

Junior Valerie Collins (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley) crossed first in the 1,500-meter run in a time of 5:00.45, while junior Kate Reilly (Scranton, Pa. / Scranton Prep) took third in 5:08.14. Senior Rose Ciriello (Madison, N.J. / Madison) won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:20.09, and junior Abigail Levine (Bethesda, Md. / Bethesda Chevy Chase) won the 5,000-meter event in a time of 18:19, while sophomore Parvathi Meyyappan (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) placed second in a time of 18:56. 

The Tartans will host the Carnegie Mellon Quad on Saturday, March 30 with field events set to start at 10:00 a.m.
