Tartans Wrap up Opening Weekend at Marietta Pioneer Open

(MARIETTA, Ohio) — The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team competed at the Pioneer Open, the second meet of the weekend, hosted by Marietta College on Saturday. The women placed 9th among 17 teams of Division III competitors at the meet.

Freshman Francine Leung (Port Jefferson, N.Y. / The Stony Brook School) placed first in the long jump with a mark of 4.93 meters in her collegiate debut. Fellow freshman Liz Barre (Ithaca, N.Y. / Taft) placed third in the high jump clearing 1.52 meters. Barre also competed in the 55-meter hurdles placing first in her heat of the prelims with a time of 9.04.

Freshman Jasmine Fahrenkrug (Vestal, N.Y. / Vestal) placed 15th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.73. In the 3,000-meter run, senior Selina Lee (Johns Creek, Ga. / Chattahoochee) took seventh with a time of 12:04 after returning from injury.

In the triple jump, sophomore Sami Johnson (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Thousand Oaks) placed second with 10.25 meters, while freshman Serena Li (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) took third with 10.06 meters.

Junior Alessandra Tully (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) placed 12th in the shot put with a throw of 9.75 meters. The junior also placed 10th in the weight throw with a toss of 12.67 meters.

The Tartans will compete next at Case Western University in the annual Battle for the Obelisk on Saturday, January 25th.
