Tartans Compete at Opening Day of UAA Indoor Championships

(CLEVELAND, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University women's indoor track and field team competed at the first day of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Championships on Saturday hosted by Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. After the first day of competition, the Tartans are tied for third place with 21.5 points. The University of Chicago leads with 69 points.

Juniors Liz Barre (Ithaca, N.Y. / Taft) and Serena Li (San Jose, Calif. / Lynbrook) scored the first points of the championships for the Tartans after placing fifth and eighth in the long jump, respectively. Barre recorded a career-best jump of 5.28 meters with Li jumping 5.04 meters.

Junior Ola Owodunni (Philadelphia, Pa. / Central) and freshman Kayla Rountree (New Haven, Conn. / James Hillhouse) also placed fifth and eighth in the weight throw. Owodunni tossed the element a career-best 14.76 meters to take fifth, as Rountree finished eighth with a mark of 13.00 meters.

The pole vault saw sophomore JoJo Huczko (Murrysville, Pa. / Franklin Regional) place fourth after she cleared the bar at a personal-best height of 3.47 meters. Senior Ashley Zhang (Great Falls, Va. / Langley) ended eighth, also clearing the bar at a personal-best height of 3.17 meters.

Graduate student Michelle Murray (Greenlawn, N.Y. / Harborfields) finished eighth in the 5,000-meter run after crossing in 18:09.05.

The Tartans' distance medley relay team of senior Taylor Jacobs (Bozeman, Mont./ The Taft School), sophomore Isabella Rhee (Midland, Mich. / H.H. Dow), junior Kavya Tummalapalli (Plainsboro, N.J. / West Windsor-Plainsboro High School) and senior Kristen Seballos (Cleveland, Ohio / Padua Franciscan) placed fourth with a time of 12:16.71.

The final day of the championships will begin with the shot put and high jump at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, February 27.
