Tartans Hold Fifth Place After First Day of UAA Indoor Championships

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team opened competition of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, February 24 at The Armory in New York, New York. After five scored events, the Tartans are in fifth place with 17.5 points.

Top Performances on the Track:

  • Senior Liz Barre qualified for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a preliminaries time of 8.88 seconds.
  • Barre will also run in the finals for the 200-meter dash after an indoor career-best time of 25.57 in the preliminaries.
  • Senior Isabella Rhee qualified for the finals in the 400-meter run with a preliminaries time of 59.36. It was a career-best for the indoor 400 race for Rhee.
  • Sophomore Jacqueline Liu will run in the finals of the 800-meter run on Sunday after qualifying with a time of 2:17.83.
  • Sophomore Orit Shiang placed seventh in the 5,000-meter run in a time of 17:38.58 to score points for the Tartans.
  • The distance medley relay team of sophomore Margaret Ann Healy, junior Sunny Tang, senior Emily Lannen, and senior Sophia Zalewski placed sixth to earn points for the team with a season-best time of 12:27.75.

Top Performances in the Field:

  • Barre took second in the long jump with a leap of 5.65 meters to set a season-best mark.
  • Sophomore Zoe King was seventh with an indoor career-best mark of 5.33 meters.
  • Freshman Hazel Buonopane earned points after tying for sixth place in the pole vault by clearing 3.36 meters.
