Tartans Break Two School Records During First Day of UAAs

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University women's track and field team began competition at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Outdoor Championships at the Icahn Stadium in New York on Saturday, April 26. After day one, the Tartans are in third place of seven teams with 33 points.
Top Performances on the Track
- Junior Orit Shiang won the 10,000-meter run with a time of 35:38.81, breaking Carolyn Lowe's 1992 school record of 35:49.10. She's only the second 10,000-meter champion in program history.
- Two other Tartans also earned points for the team in the 10,000-meter run: senior Alyssa Hoffman placed fifth with a time of 38:27.58 and senior Lauren May placed seventh with a time of 38:40.85, in her first collegiate appearance in this event.
- The team of freshman Emma Horsley, junior Margaret Ann Healy, senior Rhythm Satav, and graduate student Caitlin Guilfoyle completed the 4x800-meter relay in a time of 9:23.90, earning fourth place.
Finals Qualifiers
- Junior Iniyaa Mohanraj and freshman Alin Aydogan qualified seventh and eighth in the 100-meter hurdles with times of 15.74 and 16.29, respectively. Mohanraj's time was a personal best.
- Junior Jackie Liu qualified fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:15.52.
Top Performances in the Field
- In the hammer throw, junior Katie Monahan earned a mark of 43.12 meters, and senior Kayla Rountree earned a personal record mark of 42.96 meters, placing seventh and eighth, respectively, to earn points for the team.
- Monahan also placed fifth in the shot put. Her mark of 12.62 meters broke her previous school record of 12.44 meters.
- Senior Taylor Symonette also picked up points for the Tartans in the shot put, placing seventh with a mark of 11.87 meters.
- Clearing 3.47 meters in the pole vault earned sophomore Hazel Buonopane a sixth-place finish.
