#12 Tartans Split at Otterbein

(WESTERVILLE, Ohio) - The 12th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University volleyball team split action on the road Saturday, September 28 to move to 14-3 for the year. The first match was a 3-1 loss to host Otterbein University while the Tartans defeated the University of Mount Union, 3-0.

Against Otterbein, the Tartans took a 1-0 lead with a 25-13 first set victory. The Cardinals regrouped and rattled off three set wins, 25-20, 25-19, 26-24, for the match win to move to 14-2 overall.

Leading the Tartans attack was sophomore Vivian Beaudoin (Washington, N.J. / Warren Hills) and senior Sahara Aqui (Miramar, Fla. / Archbishop McCarthy) with seven kills apiece. Senior Erika Foose (Allentown, Pa. / Parkland) put down six kills while freshman Stella Yan (Coppell, Texas / Coppell) had 16 assists and senior Maia So-Holloway (Oakland, Calif. / Sacred Heart Cathedral) had 15. Senior Kayla Yew (San Francisco, Calif. / Sacred Heart Cathedral) led with 14 digs while junior Diana Balta (Media, Pa. / Penncrest) had 13 digs. Foose collected six block assists with Beaudoin recording five block assists and two block solos. Sophomore Erin Westberg (Cary, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) also assisted at the net with three block assists and one block solo.

In the night cap, the Tartans put away Mount Union, 25-13, 25-20, and 25-22 hitting .220 or better in all three sets.

Foose led the offense with 11 kills while Aqui, Balta, and Beaudoin each had seven kills. So-Holloway and Yan split the dishes with 17 and 15 assists, respectively. Yew had 27 digs and Foose had five block assists.

The Tartans return to University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday, October 6 when they face Case Western Reserve University and third-ranked University of Chicago at Emory University.
