Ian Bangor - Golf

Playing golf for Carnegie Mellon has truly been a rewarding experience.  Entering this university as a freshman can be challenging for anyone, but golf has played a crucial role in helping me handle these challenges.  From the first time I stepped foot on campus, I have been very fortunate to have a group of ten or twelve individuals that share a similar passion for golf and have made some of my most lasting friendships through this team.

From a very young age I have wanted to play competitive golf.  I find very few things more challenging but also find very few things more rewarding.  Carnegie Mellon gave me the opportunity to attend a world-class academic program and also to continue to improve my game and to compete.  Being a member of the golf team has always given me a great escape from the demands of school.  It has given me the opportunity to practice at a wonderful facility and has allowed me to continue to compete in tournament golf.  For me, there is hardly a more motivating experience than coming back from a tournament in which you helped your team win.

In years to come, I know that when I look back to my college days, I will remember those times spent on the course with my teammates most vividly.  The funny moments during trips to tournaments, or the constant competitions during practice and practice rounds are some of the small but rewarding things about being part of a team during college.  Playing on the golf team and going to such a demanding university can be very tiring at times, but the rewards from doing both are well worth the effort.  As a young player on the team I was very fortunate to have to some very helpful and fun older members of the team and I hope that I can provide the same rewarding experience to members of the current team.
