Thompson Recognized With Second UAA Honor

(ROCHESTER, N.Y.) – Senior Sam Thompson (Alcoa, Tenn.) of the Carnegie Mellon University football team was named University Athletic Association (UAA) Special Teams Athlete of the Week following his performance at Case Western Reserve University this past Saturday. Thompson recorded his second return punt for a touchdown this season in the 27th Annual Academic Bowl.

Thompson had three punt returns for 68 yards with a long of 56 which was returned for the score.  The senior corner back also recorded four solo tackles in the 36-24 setback.  Thompson currently ranks second in the NCAA in punt returns with an average of 18.73 yards per return.  

Earlier this season, Thompson set a school record with a 92-yard punt return for a touchdown at Wabash College.  That touchdown marked the first Tartan punt return in 13 years for a score.

The Tartans will play in the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Southwest Bowl Saturday, November 17.  The Cardinal and Gray will travel to Waynesburg University for a 1:00 p.m. kick at John F. Wiley Stadium.
