McGrath Named ECAC South All-Star

(CENTERVILLE, Mass.) – Following a breakout 2012 season, Carnegie Mellon University senior cornerback Liam McGrath (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) was named to the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III South All-Star team.

McGrath led the University Athletic Association (UAA) with seven interceptions, which tied the school's single-season record set last season by senior cornerback Sam Thompson and Andy Helms in 1991.  The senior finished the season tied for fifth nationally in interceptions while ranking 17th nationally in interceptions per game with 0.64.  He also ranked second in the UAA with 15 passes defended. Against Ohio Wesleyan this season, he returned an interception for a touchdown, marking the first score of his career. McGrath ended the season with 60 tackles, 46 solo.

In the 2012 ECAC Southwest Bowl against Waynesburg, the senior recorded six tackles, five solo, and had an interception.

McGrath is the first Tartan to be named to the ECAC All-Star Team since Aaron Lewis, Travis Sivek and J.P. White earned the honor following the 2006 season.  Lewis was selected as a defensive back, Sivek as a running back and White as an offensive lineman.  Sivek and Lewis were selected to the team in 2005 as well while Sivek also earned ECAC Southwest Rookie of the Year in 2004.
