Tartans Drop Hard Fought Battle on Late Field Goal by Waynesburg

(WAYNESBURG, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University football team traveled to Waynesburg University for a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) contest and dropped a 24-21 decision on a late field goal by the Yellow Jackets. Carnegie Mellon moves to 2-3 and 1-3 in PAC play while Waynesburg is now 3-3, 3-2.

Senior quarterback Alex Cline (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) became the program leader for most career completions. He now has 417 completions and passed Rob Kalkstein's (2010-13) mark of 405. Cline also moved into second on the school's all-time passing chart after throwing for 161 yards and a touchdown. Cline now has 5,478 yards for his career and needs 42 more to become the all-time leader. Cline also finished 23 yards rushing and a score on the ground.

Senior Karl Kumm (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) had a career-high 78 yards receiving on five receptions and a touchdown. Junior Chris Haas (Coronado, Calif./Coronado) led the Tartans rush attack with 65 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore Mason Tolliver (Sylmar, Calif./Crespi) led the Tartans defense with a career-high 11 tackles, seven solo. Junior Michael Lohmeier (Clarendon Hills, Ill./Hinsdale Central) recorded a sack and totaled four tackles including 2.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore Danny Zahniser (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) and junior Quinn Gaughan (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) each ended the day with a career-best seven tackles.

Waynesburg jumped out to a 14-0 lead at the 5:22 mark of the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets took the opening possession of the game and marched 74 yards caped off with a 13-yard run by Perone. After holding the Tartans to a three-and-out, Waynesburg needed eight plays to double its lead, as Walker scored on a 6-yard option play.

With six minutes to play in the half, Carnegie Mellon cut the deficit to 14-7. Cline connected with Kumm on a 5-yard touchdown reception that capped off a 10-play, 54-yard drive.

After holding the Yellow Jackets to a three-and-out, the Tartans drove 50 yards on the ensuing possession which resulted in a 3-yard touchdown run by Haas which knotted the score at 14-14 with 2:14 to play in the first half.

Carnegie Mellon open the second half with a 10-play, 60-yard drive, that started following a 30-yard kickoff return by junior Willie Richter (Leander, Texas/Cedar Park), and ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by Cline. The score gave the Tartans their first lead of the game at 21-14 five minutes into the third quarter.

The Yellow Jackets tied the score at 21-21 when Perone found Dozhay Crumb for an 11-yard touchdown toss with 10:08 to play in regulation. Eight minutes later, Waynesburg took a 24-21 lead as Garret Guthrie connected on a 35-yard field goal with 1:56 on the clock.

Carnegie Mellon will welcome Bethany College to Gesling Stadium on Saturday, October 13 for a 1:00 p.m. kick.
