Young Named PAC Defensive Player of the Week; Cooke Honored by D3football.com

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon University Sophomore outside linebacker Logan Young (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) was named Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Defensive Player of the Week while sophomore Kevin Cooke (Glen Ellyn, Ill./IC Catholic Prep) was recognized nationally on the D3football.com Team of the Week for his play on special teams. The honors come after the Tartans' 39-3 win over Waynesburg Saturday, September 25.

Young turned in a career night as he totaled five tackles (3 solo) and a sack, forced and recovered a fumble and returned an interception 47 yards for a touchdown in the win. The Tartan defense limited the Yellow Jackets to 194 yards of total offense while forcing five turnovers. Young forced and recovered a Waynesburg fumble on the second half's opening kickoff, leading to a Cardinal and Gray field goal that extended the Tartans' lead to 23-3.

Cooke made a huge impact in the Tartans win. Midway through the third quarter, the Tartans defense pushed the Yellow Jackets back to their own 2-yard line and forced a punt. Cooke then penetrated the line to block the punt out of the back of the end zone for a safety to make the score 25-3. It was Cooke's first career block and the sophomore ended the game with a career-best six tackles.

Carnegie Mellon will travel to Bethany, West Virginia on Saturday, October 2 to play the Bison. Kick is set for 1:00 p.m.
