Coyne Receives PAC Weekly Defensive Honors

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – Carnegie Mellon University senior Ben Coyne (McDonald, Pa./South Fayette) was named Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Defensive Athlete of the Week following his play Saturday in the Tartans' 10-7 upset win over #22 RPI.

Coyne totaled a career-high eight tackles, four solo, and 3.0 sacks for a loss of 16 yards. Saturday marked the Tartans sixth-straight win over a ranked opponent and the program's ninth-straight win, which is the second-longest active streak in Division III. Two of Coyne's sacks came in the fourth quarter, the first on a fourth down which gave the Tartans the ball back with 4:37 to play and the second on the Engineers final drive of the game which forced RPI to spike the ball with four seconds remaining in the contest. His 3.0 sacks were the most in a game by a Carnegie Mellon player since Michael Lohmeier had 3.0 on October 26, 2019, against Thiel.

Carnegie Mellon, ranked 20th in the latest D3football.com poll, will open PAC play on Saturday, September 17 when the Wolverines of Grove City College travel to Pittsburgh. Kick is set for 1:00 p.m. on the turf at Gesling Stadium.
