Robert Coury and Adrian Williams Named D3football.com All-America
(MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.) – Graduate students linebacker Robert Coury and defensive back Adrian Williams of the Carnegie Mellon University football team have been honored on the 2024 D3football.com All-America team. After finding a spot on the second team the previous two seasons, Coury was named to the first team this season while Williams is making his first trip to the team and was named to the fourth team.
The two honorees are the most for the program since 2017 and is only the fourth time in the 26 years of D3football.com All-America team that Carnegie Mellon has had multiple honorees in the same season.
Both Coury and Williams were first team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) selections this season as the two of them headed a defense that led the PAC in total defense and were ranked second nationally, allowing 203.4 yards per game of total offense at the conclusion of the regular season. The Cardinal and Gray also led the league averaging 9.1 tackles for loss per game which ranked third in the nation. The defense held nine of their 10 regular season opponents under 100 yards on the ground and broke a school record when holding Centre to -33 yards rushing in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Their rushing defense was ranked second in the PAC and seventh nationally allowing 53.2 yards per game.
Coury, who was William V. Campbell Trophy Finalist and a finalist for the 2024 Gagliardi Trophy, led the defense for the fifth straight season in tackles (77) and fourth straight season in tackles for loss (18.5) while also leading the squad with 6.0 sacks. Coury forced five fumbles, recovered two fumbles and had one blocked punt this season. His five forced fumbles ranked fourth nationally. He finished his career with 366 tackles and 65.0 tackles for loss, ranking tops all-time in program history in both categories.
Williams recorded 36 solo tackles and had 53 total stops while posting four pass breakups, an interception and a fumble recovery. He ended his career with nine interceptions and his 10th in program history. Williams also recorded 31 pass breakups for his career which is the most by a Tartan in the last 25 years. The defensive back ended his career ranked 11th in program history with 126 solo tackles.
This marks Coury's third All-America honor this season as he has been named to the second team by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and first team by the Associate Press (AP). This is the third straight season he has been honored by all three organizations as an All-America and it is the first time a Tartans has garner the accoladed from all three in three straight seasons.
