Bio

Bernie Colbert will begin his 10th season on the Carnegie Mellon football staff in 2023. Colbert will coach the offensive line.

Since his arrival on the Tartan staff, Colbert has coached two All-Americans; Andrew Garibaldi in 2015 and then Sean Pogorelc in 2020-21.

Colbert came to Carnegie Mellon after serving as the offensive line coach at Saint Vincent College since the rebirth of the program in 2007. Colbert worked under his brother, Bob, while at Saint Vincent and in 2011 the staff was honored with Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Coach of the Year honors after leading the Bearcats to a 6-5 overall mark and appearance in the ECAC Southwest Bowl.

Prior to his time at Saint Vincent, he assisted his other brother, Kevin, the former general manager of the Pittsburgh Steelers, as a pro player evaluator from 2001-2005.

His coaching stops include serving as head coach at The Kiski School from 1979-1982 before coaching the defensive line for a year on the Tartan staff. After his brief stint at Carnegie Mellon, Colbert accepted a teaching and coaching position at his alma mater, North Catholic High School.

Colbert is a graduate of North Carolina State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He played one year for the Wolfpack before his career was halted by injury. He then joined the Wolfpack staff, under the direction of the legendary Lou Holtz, as a student assistant for three years, and helped the program to three bowl appearances.

Bernie and his wife, Denise, reside in the North Side of Pittsburgh and have three children, Jessica, Erin and Justin.
