Tartans Hot Shooting Not Enough Against #24 Washington

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team hosted #24 Washington University Friday night in a University Athletic Association tilt in Skibo Gymnasium.  The Tartans were setback by the Bears 84-76 dropping their overall mark to 3-14 and 0-6 in UAA play while Washington moves to 13-4, 3-3.

Junior Rashaun Riley (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) connected on his first three shots from long range giving Carnegie Mellon a 9-4 lead that was extended to 20-11 five minutes into play.  During the stretch the Tartans were perfect from the field making all eight shots including four three-pointers.

With the Tartans leading 24-14, the Bears scored 10 unanswered tying the contest at the 9:15 mark of the first stanza.  Over the next three minutes, Carnegie Mellon went ahead 36-30 following a trey by senior Andre Moore (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding), but the visitor's responded once again. This time, Washington scored 11 straight claiming a 41-36 lead and took a three-point edge into the break, 46-43.

Carnegie Mellon shot 59% from the field in the first half including 7-of-13 from behind the arc.  Riley led all scorers with 18 first half points shooting 7-of-10 from the field and 4-of-5 from long range.

At the 17:31 mark of the second half, Moore gave the lead back to the Tartans with a trey making the score 50-49.  From there, the game saw the lead change hands seven more times with five ties.  With the score deadlocked at 64-64, Washington's Tim Cooney connected on a three-point shot sparking seven straight points scored by the Bears, giving them a 71-64 lead.

The Tartans cut the deficit to 71-69 on a jumper by junior Asad Meghani (Dallas, Texas/The Greenhill School) with 6:09 to play, but that is as close as the home team came before falling 84-76.

Carnegie Mellon shot 51% from the floor to the Bears 48%.  The Tartans were led by Riley's 23 points while Moore and Meghani each had 17.  Junior Rob Mohen (Stamford, Conn./Regis (NY)) also scored in double figures with 12 points.  

Six Bears scored in double figures with Robert Burnett leading the way with 17 points.

Carnegie Mellon will host the University of Chicago on Sunday, January 27 at 12:00 p.m. in Skibo Gymnasium.
