Tartans Second Half Run on Senior Day Not Enough Against Emory

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team dropped an 89-74 University Athletic Association (UAA) game to the visiting Eagles of Emory University Sunday afternoon. Carnegie Mellon moves to 10-14 overall and has a mark of 5-8 in UAA play. Emory is now 19-5 and tied atop the UAA with a 10-3 mark.

After opening the game converting 1-of-9 from the floor, Carnegie Mellon end the day shooting 49.1% from the floor as Emory shot 50.7%. The Eagles owned the boards Sunday hauling down 43 to the Tartans 26 while the visitors grabbed 18 offensive boards that turned into 23 second chance points.

Junior Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) scored 21 points to lead the Tartans, as it marked his seventh 20-point contest of the season. Senior Seth Henry (Fulton, Md./Reservoir) and sophomore Ethan Miller (King of Prussia, Pa./Upper Merion) both finished with 10 points apiece.

Matt Davet led Emory with 23 point coming off the bench. The sophomore accounted for all four of the Eagles bench points on the afternoon. Lawrence Rowley finished with 19 points behind 16 from Romin Williams, 13 by Gebereal and 12 off the hands of Matthew Schner.

The Tartans slow shooting start led to 12-4 advantage for the Eagles five minutes into play. During the stretch, Emory converted 5-of-7 from the floor. Emory continued to maintain control of the first half and led by as many as 20 (35-15) with 4:40 to play in the frame. A triple by Howarth as time expired left the score 44-31 at the break.

Carnegie Mellon used a 12-4 run over a 3:29 span and cut the deficit to 60-54. Every Tartan point during the run were scored from behind the arc, as Carnegie Mellon converted 4-of-5 from behind the arc. From there, Emory used a 15-4 run over the next six minutes and pushed its lead back to double figures at 75-58. The Eagles held the double digit lead the rest of the way before going on for the 89-74 win.

The Tartans will end their season on Saturday, February 23, with a 4:00 p.m. tip in Cleveland, Ohio against the Spartans of Case Western Reserve University.
