Tartans Send Seniors Off With 87-65 Win Over Case Western Reserve

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team ended the season on Saturday with an 87-65 win over the visiting Spartans of Case Western Reserve University. The University Athletic Association (UAA) finale for both teams was played on the hardwood of Skibo Gymnasium.

The Tartans shot 54.7% from the field converting 35-of-64, including 12-of-25 (48.0%) from behind the arc. The 12 made three-point baskets was a season-best for Carnegie Mellon. Case Western Reserve finished the game shooting 32.8% (22-67) and was 7-of-27 from long range.

Junior Daniel Weiss (Marlboro, N.J.) led the Tartans with a career-high 21 points while senior Trent Suddeth (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) ended the game with 20 points and nine rebounds. Suddeth's 20 points marked the fourth time this season he has scored 20 or more in a contest and second straight game he has done so.

Senior Zach Howarth (Freehold, N.J./St. John Vianney) chipped in with 17 points in the win and finished his career with 1,264 points, ranking sixth all-time in program history. Senior Colin McNeil (Ringoes, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) ended his career handing out nine assists against the Spartans which ends the all-time career leader with 458 over his four years.

Case Western Reserve was led by Cole Frilling and Ryan Newton with 13 points each. Monty Khela ended the game with 10 points.

At the 8:02 mark of the first half, Case Western Reserve led 23-19 before the Tartans used a 16-2 run and led 35-25 with a minute to play. The home team then took a 38-28 into the locker room. During the Tartans run, five different Tartans scored with junior Zach Watson (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) scoring five of his season-best nine points.

Carnegie Mellon's lead doubled four minutes into the second when a McNeil layup made the 54-34. The Tartans stayed in control of the contest with their lead never dropping below 16 points the rest of the game.

The win ends the Tartans record at 11-14 overall and 4-10 in the UAA. The Spartans finish the season with a mark of 13-12 and 6-8.
