Tartans Remain Undefeated at Home, Top NYU, 80-62

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team won its third straight home University Athletic Association (UAA) contest and is now 7-0 at home for the season after an 80-62 victory against New York University on Friday, February 3.

How it Happened

  • A back-and-forth first half saw the Tartans lead by nine, 25-16, with 7:20 to play after a three-pointer by junior Jack Stone.
  • The Violets answered with back-to-back triples to start a 12-2 run to retake the lead at 28-27 with 4:05 to go.
  • The Tartans finished the half with a 7-2 burst off baskets by Stone, senior Sean Oberman, and junior R.J. Holmes.
  • Both teams shot 50.0% or better in the first half with the Tartans knocking down 55.6% from the floor.
  • NYU quickly regained the lead scoring eight of the first 10 points of the second half to lead 38-36 after a three-pointer by Spencer Freedman.
  • Senior Josh Berry stopped the NYU run with a three-pointer and after the score was tied twice by NYU, the Tartans took the final lead of the game off a jumper by Berry with 15:07 to go.
  • The Tartans built an 11-point lead over the next seven minutes behind seven points from Stone and five from freshman Buckley DeJardin with two coming from freshman Justin Allen and another bucket by Berry.
  • The Tartan starters scored the last 19-of-21 points for the home team while the Violets shot 30.8% in the final 7:17 of the game with the Tartans leading by double digits.

Tartan Stats

  • Stone hit 4-of-6 from behind the arc and finished with a game-high 24 points.
  • Holmes shot 63.6% from the field and finished with 16 points and seven rebounds.
  • Berry and senior Nick Nakasian each scored 11 with Berry also dishing out four assists.

Violet Stats

  • Graduate students Spencer Freedman and Michael Savarino led the team with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
  • Cinque Stephens scored 12 points off the bench.
  • The Violets took more than half of their shots from long range, making 10 for the game.

Game Notes

  • The Tartans shot 50.0% or better for the second straight game.
  • The Tartans were 9-of-9 from the free throw line for the game.
