Three Tartan 20-Point Scorers in 89-82 win at Whitworth

(SPOKANE, Wash.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team traveled to Spokane, Washington to play the Pirates of Whitworth University Friday night. The Tartans left with an 89-82 victory.

How it Happened

  • Midway through the first half the Tartans trailed 18-15 before the Pirates extended their lead with a 9-1 run over a three-minute stretch and led 27-16 with 8:01 on the clock.
  • Carnegie Mellon answered by scoring the next six points, a traditional three-point play by senior R.J. Holmes and a triple by junior Aidan Murphy.
  • Whitworth's Diego Jaques followed with a bucket before Carnegie Mellon sophomore Justin Allen hit back-to-back jumpers to extend the Tartans run to 10-2 and pulled the visitors to within three points at 29-26 with 5:40 to play in the half.
  • With 18 ticks on the clock in the first stanza, Holmes connected on a layup to knot the score at 36-all as the teams went into the locker room.
  • The Tartans opened the second half scoring seven of the first eight points and took a 43-37 lead, the first since early in the first half.
  • With the score 45-39 following a made basket by Tartans sophomore Buckley DeJardin, Whitworth used a 14-7 run and with 12:35 to play grabbed a 53-52 lead.
  • The Cardinal and Gray countered scoring the next 11 points and led 63-53 two minutes later. The run started with a driving layup by Holmes followed with a four-point play from Murphy.
  • With 2:25 to play in regulation, the Tartans led 83-73 and the Pirates used a 9-2 run over a span of 1:38 to make the score 85-82, but Carnegie Mellon scored the final four points of the game and held on for the 89-82 victory.  

Tartan Stats

  • The Tartans shot 50.8% from the field after converting 31-of-61 including an 11-of-25 (44.0%) effort from behind the arc.
  • Three Tartans turned in a 20-point plus outing with a Allen leading the way with 27 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the floor and converted all seven of his free throws. The junior also led the Cardinal and Gray with a career-high eight assists.
  • DeJardin scored 21 points in the win and made a career-high four triples.
  • Holmes finished the night with 20 points and a career-high 15 rebounds while adding three blocks.

Pirate Stats

  • The Pirates shot 42.5% from the field after converting 31-of-73.
  • Whitworth had five players score in double figures with Jojo Anderson leading the way with 19 points.
  • Jake Holtz ended the game with a double-double scoring 15 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Holtz also led the Pirates with five assists and four steals.

Game Notes

  • Holmes' double-double was the first for him this season and the 16th of his career.
  • It is the second straight game that DeJardin has scored 20 or more points.
  • The Tartans have now won 13 straight games when shooting over 50.0% from the floor.
