Allen Drops 40 in 95-88 Win at W&J

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team rebounded from its first defeat over the weekend with a 95-88 win at Washington & Jefferson College on Monday, November 20. The Tartans are now 4-1 while the Presidents drop to 2-4.

How it Happened

  • The teams traded baskets for most of the first half with W&J holding the lead for a near 17-minute stretch.
  • Sophomore Buckley DeJardin drained a three-pointer after a steal by sophomore Jonathan Milloway to give the Tartans a 37-36 lead, their first of the half since the opening bucket, with 2:46 to play.
  • The lead changed hands five more times in the final minutes of the frame with W&J holding a one-point advantage at 42-41.
  • Sophomore Justin Allen hit 7-of-11 from the field in the first frame to lead all scorers with 18 points.
  • W&J would start the second half with a 10-4 run to lead by seven before a three-point play by Allen started a 17-5 blitz over a 3:48 span that put the Tartans up 57-62.
  • The Tartans would lead by as many as 11 points on a triple by junior Aidan Booher with 7:39 to go.
  • The Presidents rallied to pull the game even at 82-all with 4:11 to play but Allen responded with seven straight points for the Tartans to retake the lead and hold it for the remainder of the game as the Cardinal and Gray went 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the final 40 seconds.

For the Tartans

  • Allen poured in 40 points, three points shy of tying the school record, on 13-of-21 shooting from the floor and 12-of-14 shooting from the free throw line.
  • DeJardin followed with 21 points and tied for the team lead in rebounds with eight.
  • Senior Jack Stone scored 12 points off the bench and was perfect from the floor and free throw line while dishing out two assists in his first action this season.
  • Milloway and senior R.J. Holmes each grabbed eight rebounds with Holmes scoring eight points and Milloway seven.

For the Presidents

  • Matt Seidl finished with 26 points with Nick Gearhart scoring 21.
  • Alex Acosta had 15 points and 11 boards.
  • Seidl also led the team in assists with four.

Notes

  • The Tartans lead the all-time series 42-38 and have an 11-game winning streak against the Presidents.
  • The 40 points scored by Allen is his career-high while his 13 field goals made ties his career-high set earlier this year at Whitman.
