Tartans Drop a 95-87 Contest at #22 WashU

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team continued its University Athletic Association (UAA) four-game road trip on Friday night with a 95-87 setback at the 22nd-ranked Bears of Washington University in St. Louis.

How it Happened

  • WashU jumped out to a 10-4 lead four minutes into the contest, but the Tartans responded scoring nine straight points to grab a 13-10 lead following a triple by junior Justin Allen with 13:45 to play in the first half.
  • With the Tartans leading 16-12, the Bears used an 8-2 spirt to retake the lead at 20-18 with 9:32 on the clock.
  • Carnegie Mellon took the lead back following an Allen layup that made the score 24-22, but the Bears answered scoring nine straight and regained the lead at 31-24 with seven minutes left in the first.
  • Another run by the Tartans led to the fifth lead change of the contest. This time the scamper was 12-4 that concluded at the 3:34 mark with a three-point basket off the hands of senor Jack Stone.
  • Over the remainder of the half, the lead changed hands three more times with the score knotted two times, while the Bears took a 47-42 at the break following a three-point basket by Kyle Beedon with three seconds left in the frame.   
  • WashU started the second half on a 9-3 run and extended its lead to 56-45 three minutes into play.
  • With the Bears leading 65-54 at the 14:29 mark, Carnegie Mellon scores 11 straight points over the next four minutes to knot the score at 65-all.
  • The home team responded with four straight points and held the lead until 3:42 when sophomore Buckley DeJardin made a layup for the Tartans to give the Cardinal and Gray an 81-80 advantage.  
  • The Bears again answered with another four straight points and led 84-81 with 3:13 to play.
  • The run continued, as the Bears extended it to 11-2 and led 91-83 with 1:17 on the clock and went on for the 95-87 victory.

Tartan Stats

  • The Tartans shot 47.8% from the floor while converting 8-of-25 from behind the arc for 32.0%.
  • Three players scored in double figures for the Tartans with Allen leading the way with 28. Stone ended the game with 20 points. Senior R.J. Holmes ended with 18 points after converting 7-of-11 from the floor.

Bear Stats

  • The Bears shot 53.5% from the floor while converting 11-of-24 from behind the arc for 45.8%.
  • Will Grudzinski led four Bears in double figures with 21 points. Jabari Chiphe had 16, Beedon finished with 15 and Hayden Doyle had 13 points.

Game Notes

  • Allen has now scored 20 or more points in nine games this season.
  • Carnegie Mellon is now 2-2 against ranked opponents this season.
