Booher's Perfect Night Leads Tartans Over #17 WashU

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team beat its third nationally-ranked opponent in University Athletic Association (UAA) play to record the program's 1,000th win with a 79-73 victory over 17th-ranked Washington University in St. Louis. The Tartans are now 12-7 overall and 4-4 in the UAA while the Bears are 14-5 and 4-4.

How It Happened

  • The Bears held a three-point lead, 27-24, with 7:31 to go in the first half.
  • Following a timeout by the Bears, the Tartans rattled off 15 consecutive points with junior Aidan Booher scoring 11 straight to start the run and the Tartans led 41-29 at the break.
  • The Bears brought the deficit to five points after 4:11 of the second half but the Tartans answered with a layup by junior Jonathan Milloway and another three-pointer by Booher, his third of the game, to lead by 10 once again.
  • With 10:05 to go, the Bears took a two-point lead and stretched it to five on a triple by Kyle Beedon.
  • The visitors would hold the lead for more than five minutes before sophomore Justin Allen connected on a three-pointer off an assist by Milloway to give the home team a 70-68 advantage with 4:38 to play.
  • The Tartans would score nine of the final 14 points of the game while grabbing two offensive rebounds on one possession to take nearly a minute off the clock while leading by six.
  • The Bears took a timeout with six seconds to go and down by four but the ensuing inbounds play by the Tartans was pushed upcourt with a lob pass by senior Jack Stone to sophomore Buckley DeJardin for a slam to put the exclamation point on the game for the Tartans.

For the Tartans

  • Four players finished in double figures with Allen leading the team with 20 points, scoring 16 in the second half.
  • DeJardin added 17 points while Booher finished with a season-high 16 points after shooting 100% from the field including making a season-high four from behind the arc.
  • Milloway finished with 12 points off the bench.
  • Senior R.J. Holmes led the team with seven rebounds with junior Nolan Casey, Allen and Milloway each grabbing six rebounds.
  • The team shot 51.7% from the field and assisted on 16 of 30 made baskets.

For the Bears

  • Beedon finished with 22 points after making 5-of-11 shots from the three-point arc.
  • Calvin Kapral finished with 16 points.
  • Jake Davis led with eight rebounds.
  • The team shot 38.6% from the field.

Notes

  • The Tartans shot above 50% for the fourth time this season and the first time since November 12.
  • The Tartans were 9-of-19 (47.4%) from three for their highest percentage in UAA play this year.
  • The Tartans have topped the Bears three straight times at home with the Bears being nationally ranked each season.
