Tartans Sweep Season Series Over #11 NYU with 83-80 Win

(NEW YORK, N.Y.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's basketball team continued University Athletic Association (UAA) play on Sunday afternoon at 11th-ranked New York University and left the Big Apple with an 83-80 victory.

How it Happened

  • Carnegie Mellon opened the contest connecting on its first three shots from behind the arc and led 9-2 a little under two minutes of play.
  • NYU was fast to tie the score at 9-all, but the Tartans responded scoring eight straight points to led 17-9 with 14 minutes to play in the first half.
  • A triple by sophomore Justin Allen with 5:12 on the clock gave the Tartans a 34-26 lead.
  • Following a timeout by NYU, the Violets closed the half on a 17-7 run and led 43-41 at the break.
  • A 9-0 run by the Tartans over a span of 1:37 put the Tartans ahead 55-47 six minutes into the second half.
  • With 12 minutes to play, senior Jack Stone converted three foul shots to cap off scoring seven straight points for the Tartans which gave the visitors a 62-51 advantage, their largest of the game.
  • The Violets countered Stone and the Tartans run by scoring the next 10 points to cut their deficit to 62-61 with 9:58 to play.
  • Thirty seconds later, NYU knotted the score at 63-all on a pair of foul shots by Zay Freeney.
  • On the ensuing possession, junior Lucas Pavlounis put the Tartans back on top with a layup, but NYU then scored six straight and grabbed a 69-65 lead with 6:27 on the clock.
  • The Tartans answered with a 13-2 run over a 2:40 stretch with five different Tartans contributing to the scoring and led 78-71 as the clock showed 2:05 to play.
  • With 12 seconds to play, Allen hit a foul shot to give the Tartans an 81-77 lead. The Violets then scored a fast layup and completed an and-one to make the score 81-80 with five seconds remaining.
  • Stone then made the score 83-80 as he connected on a pair of foul shots. NYU had one last shot to tie the game, but a three-point shot as time expired hit the front f the iron and dropped to the floor.

Tartan Stats

  • The Tartans shot 50.8% from the floor while converting 11-of-23 from behind the arc for 47.8%
  • Allen led three Tartans in double figures with a game-high 29 points.
  • Holmes finished with 14 points while Stone had 12 in the win.
  • Stone also finished with five assists, tying a career-high.

Violet Stats

  • The Violets shot 47.8% from the floor while converting 8-of-22 from behind the arc for 36.4%
  • Spencer Freedman led four NYU players in double figures with 20 points. Freeney had 19 points, Hampton Sanders 13 and Michael Savarino 12.
  • Emmanuel Onuama led all players on the boards with 12 while Freedman finished with a game-high six assists.

Game Notes

  • The Tartans are now 4-2 this season over ranked opponents.
  • The season sweep for the Tartans over NYU is the first since the 2018-19 season.
  • The Tartans shot above 50% for the sixth time this season and third time in the last four contests.
  • Carnegie Mellon has now won 17 straight games when shooting 50%.
  • It was Allen's sixth straight game scoring 20 or more points and seventh in the last eight games. He now has scored 20 or more in 14 contests this season.
  • Holmes has 993 career points. He needs seven points to become the 21st Tartan to reach 1,000 points for their career.
