Strimel Records Career-Low Round as Tartans Place Third at UAA Golf Championships

(SORRENTO, Fla.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team placed third at the 2012 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Wednesday, March 14.  The Tartans carded a final round team score of 310 after carding a 308 in the opening round Tuesday to finish with a 36-hole total of 618.  The two-day event was held at the Red Tail Golf Club in Sorrento, Fla.

Emory University won the team title with a total score of 581, as they edged out second-place University of Rochester (586) on the 6,768-yard, par-72 course. The Tartans took third place (618) while New York University placed fourth with a 637. Rochester sophomore Nicholas Palladino defended his individual title as he shot seven-under par for the tournament (68-69, 137). His 137, set a UAA record, one he broke last season.

Sophomore Grant Strimel (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) improved seven strokes from his opening round to card a one-over par 73 and place tied for 10th with senior Terence Einhorn (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick). Both Strimel and Einhorn ended the championship with a 36-hole score of 153.

Senior Michael Cheng (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) carded a 78 to finish 13th with a 155. Sophomore Ian Bangor (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) came into the clubhouse with a 79 on Wednesday to total a 158 while freshman Justin Fischler (Avon, Conn.) finished play with a 161 (79-82).

Strimel and Einhorn earned All-UAA second team honors.  This marks the third straight season that Einhorn has been honored.  Last season he earned second team honor after making the first team his sophomore campaign.  

The Tartans will be back on the links Friday, March 16 as the will play in the opening round of the 54-hole Jekyl Island Collegiate in Jekyl Island, Ga.
