Tartans Lead UAA Championship After First Day

(SORRENTO, Fla.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team leads the University Athletic Association Championship by two strokes after carding a first round score of 310 on a sunny afternoon with 20-30 mph winds. The championship is being played at the Red Tail Country Club in Sorrento, Fla. on the 6,768-yard, par-72 course.

Junior Ian Bangor (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) was the only golfer in the field to shoot under par as his score of 71 leads the field. Sophomore Derek Cobb (Urbana, Ohio/Urbana) shot a 77 and is currently tied for fourth. Freshman Ben DuCarme (McMurray, Pa./Canon-McMillan) fired a round of 80 in his first championship appearance as sophomore Justin Fischler (Avon, Conn./Avon) shot an 82 and sophomore Cameron Low (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) shot an 84.

The Tartans score of 310 leads Emory University by two and the University of Rochester by three, while New York University carded a 324 for the day.

Bangor currently has a four-stroke lead over two-time individual medalist Nicholas Palladino of Rochester who shot a three-over par 75.

Round two is set to begin with the first group teeing off at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 11.
