Tartans Compete in First Round of Jekyll Island Invitational

(JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga.) - Just three days after placing second at the UAA Championships, the Carnegie Mellon University golf team continued its strong start to the spring season at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on Friday, March 15. The Tartans turned in a team score of 313 and are currently tied with Hampden Sydney for 21st place in a field that includes 12 of the top 25 Division III teams in the country.
 
Junior Ian Bangor (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) led Carnegie Mellon with a first-round score of 3-over-par 75 on the 6,700-yard Pine Lakes Course. Bangor placed second at the UAA Championships earlier in the week. Sophomore Cameron Low (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) carded a 77 on Friday while classmate Derek Cobb (Urbana, Ohio/Urbana) shot an 80.

Sophomore Justin Fischler (Avon, Conn./Avon) and freshman Ben DuCarme (McMurray, Pa./Canon-McMillan) both turned in 81s to round out the Tartan scoring.
 
Defending national champion Oglethorpe University currently leads the field after scoring a 291 on Friday. Oglethorpe, which is the host institution, holds a one-stroke lead over Methodist University following the first round.
