Bangor Receives Invite to NCAA Championships

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – When the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Committee selected individuals to partake in the 2013 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships, Carnegie Mellon University junior Ian Bangor (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) was chosen to compete May 14-17 at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, in Destin, Fla., hosted by Methodist University.

A total of 210 participants will compete at the 2013 championships. Thirty conferences were awarded automatic qualification for the championships. Four teams were selected from Pool B, which consists of independent institutions and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. The final seven berths were reserved for Pool C, which are institutions from automatic-qualifying conferences that are not the conference champion and any remaining Pool B teams. The top-five individuals are selected from the remaining players who have not qualified with a team.

Bangor becomes the second Tartan individual to make the championships with the only other golfer to make it being his father Paul Bangor in 1985.  Carnegie Mellon as a team made the championships in 2009 after winning the University Athletic Association and finished 22nd out of 41 schools at the national event.

Bangor ended his regular season with an average of 73.8 through 19 rounds while winning three tournaments.  He had three season-low rounds of 69 on three occasions and set a Tartan record with a three-round score of three-under par 211 (69-69-73) at the Vulcan Invitational hosted by California University of Pennsylvania at the Cedarbrook Golf Course.  

For his career, he ranks first on the school's all-time charts with nine tournament wins and second with 15 top three finishes.  He holds a career average of 75.1 through 57 rounds and set the Tartan record for the best two-round score his freshman campaign of 141 (3-under par) at the Guy Kuhn Invitational at Meadville Country Club.
