Golf Sits in 14th After First Round of Jekyll Island Invitational

(JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team currently is tied for 14th with Skidmore College following the first round of the 15th Annual Jekyll Collegiate Invitational played on Friday, March 14.  The Tartans turned in a team score of 303 in a field of 30 teams which includes seven of the nation's top 10 teams in Division III. The three-day, 54-hole event is being held at the par-72 Pine Lakes Course on Jekyll Island.

Freshman George Qian (Bettendorf, Iowa/Montverde Academy) led the Tartans with a first-round career-best score of even par 72 on the 6,700-yard course.  Qian is tied for 10th individually out of a field of 150 golfers. Senior Ian Bangor (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) carded a four-over par 76 while sophomore Ben DuCarme (McMurray, Pa./Canon-McMillan) fired a 78 on Friday.

Junior Cameron Low (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) entered the clubhouse with a 78 and freshman Ryan Karbowicz (Avon, Conn.) was the fifth Tartan to score with a first round of 80.

LaGrange College currently leads the field after scoring a 289 on Friday. LaGrange holds a one-stroke lead over Illinois Wesleyan following the first round.

Carnegie Mellon also had three individuals play on the Oleander Course, as freshman Alex Woodward (Aurora, Ontario) shot a career-low round of one-over par 73. Junior Justin Fischler (Avon, Conn.) shot a 79 followed by junior Derek Cobb (Urbana, Ohio) with an 85.

The second round of the event will be held Saturday, March 15 with the Tartans teeing off at 8:00 a.m.
