Tartans Finish Play at Jekyll Island Invitational

(JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team finished 22nd out of 30 teams at the 15th Annual Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational Sunday, March 16.  The three-day, 54-hole event was held at the par-72 Pine Lakes Course on Jekyll Island.  The Tartans finished with a 54-hole team score of 920 after carding a 315 Sunday afternoon.

Capturing the invitational title for the second straight season was Illinois Wesleyan with a score of 920 while Methodist University finished second (880) and St. John Fisher College took third carding an 881.

Freshman George Qian (Bettendorf, Iowa/Montverde Academy) finished as the team's top performer with a 223 (72-71-80) placing tied for 29th out of 150 golfers. Qian's second-round score of one-under par on Saturday was the Cardinal and Gray's lowest of the tournament.

Senior Ian Bangor (Moon Township, Pa./Sewickley Academy) and junior Cameron Low (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) both ended eight strokes behind Qian with a 231.  Bangor carded rounds of 76-77-78 while Low recorded rounds of 78-77-76.

Sophomore Ben DuCarme (McMurray, Pa./Canon-McMillan) recorded a 237 (77-77-83) and freshman Ryan Karbowicz (Avon, Conn.) ended the event with a 238 (80-77-81).  

Carnegie Mellon had three individuals play on the Oleander Course, as freshman Alex Woodward (Aurora, Ontario) carded a three-round total of 224 (73-80-71).  Woodward's 71 he entered the clubhouse with on Sunday was a career-low round. Junior Justin Fischler (Avon, Conn.) recorded a 238 (79-78-81) while junior Derek Cobb (Urbana, Ohio) shot a 244 (85-81-78).
