Carnegie Mellon Men’s Golf Receives NCAA Bid, Second in School History

(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – The Carnegie Mellon University golf team has been selected to compete in the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. The championships will be held May 16-19, at the Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida on the El Campeón Course and Las Colinas Course. Oglethorpe University will be hosting the four-day event. The appearance by the Tartans at the championships marks the program's second trip, as the 2009 team finished 22nd at the national event.

A total of 215 participants will compete at the 2017 championships.  Thirty-three conferences were awarded automatic qualification for the championships.  Two teams were selected from Pool B, which consists of independent institutions, and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. The final seven berths were reserved for Pool C, which are institutions from automatic-qualifying conferences that are not the conference champion and any remaining Pool B teams.  The top five individuals are selected from the remaining players who have not qualified with a team.

The Tartans, along with University Athletic Association (UAA) counterpart, Emory University, received the two Pool B bids.

Senior George Qian (Bettendorf, Iowa/Montverde Academy) and junior Nikhil Mohan (Bangalore, India/Canadian International School) are the Cardinal and Gray's top two individuals this season. Qian leads the team with a stroke average of 74.0 while Mohan is averaging a 75.6.

Sophomore Patrick Tan (Vancouver, British Columbia/Prince of Wales Secondary) is third on the team with an average of 76.2 followed by senior Brad Jennette (Pittsford, N.Y./ Pittsford Sutherland) and junior Adrian Del Bosque (Monterrey, Mexico/IMG Academy), who average 77.4 and 77.9, respectively.

The first group is scheduled to tee off on Tuesday, May 16 at 7:30 a.m.
