Tartans Finish Fifth at Gordin Collegiate Classic
(COLUMBUS, Ohio) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team, ranked 11th nationally, competed in the final round of the 54-hole Gordin Collegiate Classic hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University at the par 72, 7,098-yard, Columbus Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. The Tartans fired a 299 in the final round to finish with an 878 (289-290-299) and placed fifth out of 13 teams.
The event has been played annually since 1991 while matching the elite NCAA Division III teams, featuring most if not all of the top 10 finishers from the previous spring's NCAA Division III championship tournament.
Illinois Wesleyan, ranked tied for fifth nationally, won the event with an 850 (285-278-287) while Emory University, who is ranked as the nation's top team, carded an 856 (286-291-279) and finished second. Guilford College, ranked seventh, placed third after carding an 867 (287-295-285) and Wittenberg University, ranked fourth finished fourth with an 871 (289-296-286).
Sophomore Jason Li (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) led the Tartans on Tuesday with a one-over par 73. The sophomore ended the 54-hole event with a 214 (70-71-73). His score of 214 ranks as the second-best 54-hole score in program history. Li finished tied for sixth individually in a field of 70 golfers.
Sophomore Jason Folker (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) shot a 75 in the final round to finish with a 217 (74-68-75). Freshman Joshua Lim (San Francisco, Calif./Lowell) carded a 54-hole score of 224 (72-75-77) while freshman William Knauth (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) fired a 227 (73-76-78) over the three rounds. Sophomore Jay Milch (Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane) carded his best round of the classic Tuesday afternoon with a two-over par 74. The sophomore tabbed a 231 (76-81-74) for the event.
Carnegie Mellon will host the Tartan Invitational on October 8-9. The 54-hole event will be played at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pennsylvania.
