Knauth Wins Fourth Playoff Hole to Claim Medalist Honors at Wabash Invitational, Tartans Place Third
(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – Senior William Knauth (Williamsport, Pa. / Williamsport Area) of the Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team claimed individual medalist honors at the 54-hole Wabash Invitational Tuesday afternoon after winning a four-hole playoff. The Tartans carded a 291 in the final round and placed third in the field of 14 teams with an 870 (292-287-291) on the par-72, 6,722-yard Broadmoor Country Club course in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Knauth, who recorded his first collegiate medalist honor, won the sudden death playoff after recording a par on the fourth playoff hole while Marc Mitchell of Denison University made bogie on the hole. On Tuesday, Knauth posted his third straight round of under par, two-under 70, to end the 54-hole event with a 208 (69-69-70).
Sophomore Brian Xu (San Diego, Calif. / Torrey Pines) carded a one-over par 73 in the final round to end with a 220 (73-74-73). Freshman Justin Chan (London, United Kingdom) also carded a one-over par on Tuesday, which tied his season-best round to finish a stroke behind Xu with a 221 (74-74-73).
Senior Jason Folker (Lake Forest, Ill. / Lake Forest) fired a 75 during the third round of play for a final score of 225 (76-74-75). Senior Joshua Lim (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) shot a 228 (81-70-78) over the 54-hole event.
Carnegie Mellon will host the Tartan Invitational on October 11-12. The 54-hole event will be played at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pennsylvania.
