Scavone Breaks School Record, Cards a Seven-Under 63 in Final Round at Western Pennsylvania Intercollegiate; Tartans Take First

(SEWICKLEY, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team concluded play at the 36-hole Western Pennsylvania Intercollegiate on Tuesday. Graduate student Henry Scavone set the school record for the lowest individual round in the program's history with a seven-under par 63 to lead the Tartans. The event was played at Allegheny Country Club and hosted by Wittenberg University. The Cardinal and Gray fired a 281 on Tuesday, tying the fourth lowest single-round team score in program history, for a two-round score of 578 (297-281) to win the intercollegiate.

How it Happened:

  • Scavone eagled hole six, a par 5, 500-yard hole, and recorded five birdies on Tuesday. He led the Tartans with a 36-hole score of 141 (78-63) and tied for the individual medalist at the conclusion of round two with Wittenberg's William McDavid. The two went to a playoff and on the seventh hole of the playoff Scavone won the intercollegiate with a 25-foot birdie putt.   
  • Freshman David Zhang fired a two-over par 72 over the final round and finished with a 146 (74-72).
  • Junior Brian Xu ended with a 147 (72-75).
  • Sophomore Justin Chan shot a one-over par 71 Tuesday and had a 36-hole score of 148 (77-71).
  • Freshman Andrew Wang shot a 150 (74-76).

Individual Play:

  • The Tartans had four individuals compete in the intercollegiate, as freshman Jay Saluja led the Cardinal and Gray individuals with a 143 (73-70) after carding a season-low round of even par 70 on Tuesday.
  • Senior Morgan Yang finished with a 145 (74-71).
  • Senior Joshua Lim and junior Jack Sonne both ended with a 155 Lim shot rounds of 72 and 83 while Sonne carded rounds of 75 and 80.
