(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team has been selected to compete in the 2023 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships. The championships will be held May 16-19 at the Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Kentucky, on the Champion Trace Course and the Keene Run Golf Course. Transylvania University will be hosting the four-day event.

This will mark the sixth appearance by the Tartans at the championships and the fourth straight. Last season, the Tartans placed sixth, while in 2021 the team posted its highest finish in program history placing fourth. The 2009 team finished 22nd, the 2017 team ended play 31st at the national event and the 2019 team placed 11th.

A total of 221 participants will compete at the 2023 championships. Thirty-four conferences were awarded an automatic qualification for the championships. One team was selected from Pool B, which consists of independent institutions and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification. The final eight berths were reserved for Pool C, which are institutions from automatic-qualifying conferences that are not the conference champion and any remaining Pool B teams. The six individuals are selected from the remaining players who have not qualified with a team.

The Tartans currently rank fourth nationally in the latest Division III Golfstat rankings and are led by freshman David Zhang, who currently ranks 15th in Division III as an individual with an adjusted scoring average of 73.40 through 22 rounds played.

Play begins on Tuesday, May 16 with round two to follow on Wednesday, May 17. Following 36 holes of play, the field will be cut to the top 18 teams and top six individuals. The final 18 teams will vie for the 2023 national championship with round three being played Thursday, May 18 and the fourth and final round on Friday, May 19.
