Four Men’s Golfers Named PING All-Region

(BOULDER CITY, Nev.) – Four Carnegie Mellon University men's golfers have been recognized for their play on the course this season by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Senior Brian Xu, junior Justin Chan, sophomore David Zhang and freshman Ryan Dannegger were named to the 2024 PING Region 5 team.

It marks the third straight honor Chan, second for Xu and Zhang and first for Dannegger. It is also the fourth time that at least four Tartans have received the accolade in one season.

Combined the honorees have helped the Tartans to a ranking of third nationally in the final regular season Bushnell/Golfweek DIII Coaches Poll and are competing in their seventh NCAA Championship Tournament and fifth straight this week. The Tartans also claimed their second straight University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship this season and third overall.

Xu, a First Team All-UAA honoree, has a scoring average of 72.8 while also competing in all 23 rounds. The senior recorded his season-low round of four-under par 67 during round two of Jekyll Island Collegiate. At The Visit Florence Intercollegiate, Xu recorded the program's first ever hole-and-one which came on the 160-yard, par 3 13th hole. He has recorded 13 rounds of even par or better this season.

Chan, a finalist 2024 NCAA Division III Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award and a First Team All-UAA honoree, leads the Tartans with a scoring average of 72.6 over 22 rounds played. The junior recorded his collegiate-best round of six-under par 65 at Golfweek Invitational where he placed second individually in a field of 125 golfers. Chan has recorded 10 rounds of even par or better this season.

Zhang, a First Team All-UAA honoree, has competed in all 23 rounds for the Tartans and has a scoring average of 72.7. He tied the school record for the lowest individual round with a seven-under par 65 during the second round of play at the Savannah Invitational. Zhang has recorded 12 rounds of even par or better this season.

Dannegger, who was recently named UAA Rookie of the Year, became the fifth Tartan to garner UAA Rookie of the Year honors and second straight as Zhang was honored a year ago. He averages 74.1 in 14 rounds played. Dannegger had a season-low round of three-under par 68 during round two of the Port City Invitational.
