Three Tartans Named 2024 PING All-America

(NORMAN, Okla.) – Three Carnegie Mellon University men's golfers have been named to the Division III PING All-American Team by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). Junior Justin Chan was named to the first team while senior Brian Xu and sophomore David Zhang landed a spot on the second team.

It marks the second straight honor for all three with Zhang landing a spot on the second team a season ago, as Chan and Xu received honorable recognition.

The four helped the Tartans to a runner-up finish at the 2024 NCAA Championships and claimed their second straight University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship this season and third overall. All three were also recognized on the 2024 PING Region 5 team.

Chan, who was a finalist 2024 NCAA Division III Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award and a First Team All-UAA honoree, tied for second on the team in scoring average with a 72.4 over 26 rounds played. The junior recorded his collegiate-best round of six-under par 65 at Golfweek Invitational where he placed second individually in a field of 125 golfers. Chan recorded 14 rounds of even par or better this season and placed tied for 15th individually at the NCAA Championship.

Xu, a First Team All-UAA honoree, was tied with Chan for second on the team with a scoring average of 72.4 while competing in all 27 rounds. The senior recorded his season-low round of four-under par 67 during round two of Jekyll Island Collegiate and four-under par 68 during the third round of the NCAA Championship. At The Visit Florence Intercollegiate, Xu recorded the program's first ever hole-and-one which came on the 160-yard, par 3 13th hole. He recorded 17 rounds of even par or better this season and tied for third at the NCAA Championship. It was the highest individual finish in program history and also set a school record for the best four-round score of eight-under par 280.

Zhang, a First Team All-UAA honoree, competed in all 27 rounds for the Tartans and led the team with a scoring average of 72.3. He tied the school record for the lowest individual round with a seven-under par 65 during the second round of play at the Savannah Invitational. Zhang recorded 16 rounds of even par or better this season and placed fifth at the NCAA Championship, the second highest individual finish in program history. He also holds the second best four-round score of seven-under par 281.
