Tartans Place Seventh at Tiger Invitational; ‘B’ Team Wins Hampden-Sydney Invite

(PINEHURST, N.C.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's golf team ended play on Monday at the 36-hole Tiger Invitational hosted by Hampden-Sydney College at the Forest Creek Golf Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The Tartans carded rounds of 295 and 291 and finished seventh in the 20-team field with a 586.

How it Happened:

  • Senior Justin Chan fired an opening round of four-under par 68 and then shot even par 72 for a 36-hole score of four-under 140. Chan placed tied for third individually in a field of 100 golfers.
  • Junior David Zhang finished with a four over par 148 (75-73).
  • Sophomore Ryan Dannegger carded a 151 (76-75).
  • Freshman Andy Yu carded a one-under par 71 on Monday and ended with a 151 (80-71).
  • Freshman Leonardo Vieira ended play with a 153 (76-77).

'B' Team Competes at Hampden-Sydney Invite:

  • The Tartans entered a 'B' team and one individual in the Hampden-Sydney Invite at the par 72, 6,972-yard Country Club of Whispering Pines in Whispering Pines, North Carolina. The Cardinal and Gray carded a 36-hole score of 604 (296-308) to win the invite in a field of 16 teams.
  • Sophomores Justin Luan and Steven Shea led the 'B' team, as they both carded a 36-hole score of four-over par 148 to place tied for fifth individually in a field of 94 golfers.
  • Luan carded rounds of three-under par 69 and 79 while Shea turned in back-to-back rounds of two-over par 74.
  • Freshman Will Blankenship carded a153 (76-77).
  • Junior Jay Saluja shot a157 (77-80).
  • Junior Andrew Wang finished with a 158 (80-78).

Notes:

  • Chan's score of 140 (-4) is the third lowest individual 36-hole total in the program's history.
  • Yu's one-under par round of 71 was a collegiate-best.
  • Luan's three-under par round of 69 was a collegiate-best.
