Tartans Take Down Bison 4-1

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – A four-goal second half propelled the Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team to a 4-1 win over Bethany College on Saturday, September 24 on their home field in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Tartans move to 4-3-1 on the year while the Bison drop to 1-6.

Junior goalkeeper Zach Stahl (East Brunswick, N.J.) kept the game scoreless in the first half with three saves. Bethany put those three scoring opportunities on frame with a free kick, a header off a corner and a slicing shot through the defense that shielded Stahl's view.

Senior Carmen Minella (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) broke open the scoring in the 50th minute with his team-leading fifth goal of the season. He finished a pass from sophomore Scott Gerfen (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) with a few others surrounding the six-yard box.

Three minutes later, senior Ian Epperson (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) ran a give-and-go with junior Alex Abedian (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) from the right side line straight to goal where he finished to the far post past Bison keeper Patrick Coleman.

The Tartans were quick to score again as Minella sent a ball over the top that sophomore Max Tassano (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion) chipped over Coleman for the 3-0 lead in the 56th minute.

In the 61st minute junior Ben Bryant (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) centered a pass to the near post that was swatted away by Coleman but found the foot of sophomore Chris Wysocki (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) who scored to the far post.

The Bison got on the board in the 71st minute when Arkangelo James was on the receiving end of a cross by Tyler Pannebaker. James was able to leap for a header that beat Tartan keeper Christopher Madden (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) to the near post.

The Tartans will start University Athletic Association play on Sunday, October 2, when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri, for a 11:00 a.m. match against #4 Washington University.
