Tartans Take Down Titans 3-0

Two early goals by the Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team propelled the Tartans to a 3-0 win over visiting Westminster College on Wednesday, September 14. The Tartans are now 2-2-1 on the year while the Titans move to 1-3-0.

Senior Carmen Minella (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) opened the scoring in the ninth minute when he snuck behind the defense on a ball sent over top by senior defender Ben Bryant (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills). Minella met the ball in the air and volleyed it with a flick past Titan keeper Adam Kephart.

Two minutes later, junior John Crawshaw (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) struck a ball from about 35 yards during open play that reached the net over Kephart's head for the 2-0 lead.

The Tartans kept the pressure up as sophomore Chris Wysocki (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) had a shot saved that bounced to junior Alex Abedian (Columus, Ind./Columbus North) who had a shot stopped by a defender on the goalline.

It wasn't until late in the second half that the Tartans scored their final goal. Abedian was able to find the back of the net this time when he scored from outside the 18-yard box. Sophomore Scott Gerfen (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) picked up the assist.

Junior Zach Stahl (East Brunswick, N.J.) made two saves on the night as most of the Titans' seven shots were wide of the goal.

The Tartans return to the road on Saturday, September 17, for a 5:00 p.m. match at #24 Allegheny College.
