Tartans Drop Contest at #9 Washington University

(ST. LOUIS, Mo.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team got off to an early start on the road against #9 Washington University in St. Louis but were unable to maintain the lead in a 4-1 loss in its first University Athletic Association game of the season. The Tartans are now 4-4-1 on the year while the Bears improve to 9-1.

Sophomore Max Tassano (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion) put the Tartans on the board in the 11th minute with a shot from 25 yards out that beat Bears' keeper Jonathan Jebson to the corner.

The Tartans held the 1-0 lead until the 38th minute when Cody Costakis scored an unassisted goal against junior keeper Zach Stahl (East Brunswick, N.J.). The Bears earned a free kick from 20 yards after a foul by the Tartans.

The Bears took control of the game starting in the second half with the eventual game-winner two minutes into the final period. Patrick McLean worked a give-and-go with Dylan Roman at the 46:28 mark for his fourth goal of the season.

McLean struck again in the 51st minute with a one-on-one shot past Stahl. Jeremy Kirkwood scored the final goal of the game for the Bears in the 88th minute off an assist from Zach Hendrickson.

The Tartans had one other shot on goal for the game that was taken by junior Alex Abedian (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North).

The Tartans will return home to face University of Chicago on Sunday, October 9, at 11:00 a.m.
