Grove City Upends Tartans 1-0

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team hosted Presidents' Athletic Conference leader Grove City College on Wednesday, October 19, with the Wolverines taking home a 1-0 win. The Tartans are now 5-7-1 on the year as the Wolverines move to 10-4.

In the eighth minute, Grove City's Adam Brewer hit a low driven shot that sophomore keeper Christopher Madden (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) smoothered which was the only shot on goal for the half by the Wolverines.

At 11:52 the Tartans earned a free kick from 30 yards out. Junior John Crawshaw (Carnegie, Pa./Carlyton) sent in the kick over the defense that skipped with a bounce, causing Wolverine keeper Caleb Koch to make a save. Shortly after, sophomore Chris Wysocki (Newtown, Pa./Germantown Academy) had a shot saved by Koch.

Eleven minutes into the second period, Grove City's leading scorer Andrew Quinn was able jump over two Tartan defenders sliding to clear a pass through by Eric Fitchwell. Quinn picked up the ball running away from goal around the 18-yard box and turned and shot with his left foot to the right post past Madden for his eighth goal of the season.

The Wolverines nearly added to their advantage in the 78th minute when Kyle Richert hit the crossbar and Brian Eckenhoff's attempt at the rebound was saved by Madden.

Despite the Tartans' best efforts to get forward, the Wolverine defense came up strong to hold the shutout.

The Tartans will next be in action on Friday, October 28, at 5:00 p.m. against New York University.
