Tartans Lose Lead and Game at #24 Allegheny

(MEADEVILLE, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team fell to #24 Allegheny College on Saturday, September 17 in Meadeville, Pennsylvania, 3-2. The Tartans are now 2-3-1 on the season as the Gators improve to 6-1.

There were a lot of scoring opportunities in the first half for the Tartans as they took five shots and earned seven corner kicks. For a two-minute span the Tartans took four corner kicks but weren't able to get any shots off around the 36th minute. Freshman Daniel Kursman-Neri (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) had a shot saved in the 39th minute, the second shot saved by Gator keeper John Lichina for the period.

Allegheny threatened the Tartan net four times as junior keeper Zach Stahl (East Brunswick, N.J.) made an early save in the ninth minute.

Junior Alex Abedian (Columbus, Ind./Columbus North) put the Tartans on the board seven minutes into the second period when he scored his second of the season following a corner kick by junior Ben Bryant (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills).

The Tartans held a 1-0 lead until the 68th minute when the Gators earned a corner kick. Matt Weintraub was able to redirect Cameron Olson's corner kick past Stahl for the tying goal and his first of the year.

Four minutes later, David DelGreco gave Allegheny a 2-1 lead with a break-away goal following a ball slipped through the defense.

Two shots high and wide by the Tartans preceded the Gators' third goal of the match as Andrew Zimmer scored in the 80th minute.

Senior Carmen Minella (Pittsburgh, Pa./Chartiers Valley) gave the Tartans a chance to tie the match when he scored with two-and-a-half minutes to play off an assist from sophomore Max Tassano (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion).

Eventually time ran out for the Tartans who will next play on Wednesday, September 21 at Washington & Jefferson College at 7:00 p.m.
