#7 Tartans Defeat Geneva on the Road

(BEAVER FALLS, Pa.) – Junior forward Max Tassano (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion) recorded his second game-winning goal in as many games for the Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team who defeated Geneva College 2-0 on Wednesday, September 12. The #7 Tartans are now 4-1 on the year while Geneva drops to 3-3.

Tassano put the Tartans up 1-0 early in the first period when he scored past Geneva keeper Bryan Butler following a free kick by senior Ben Bryant (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) in the fourth minute. The goal came after Butler made a save on a shot by Bryant in the third minute.

The Tartans put another four shots on goal for the period but Butler was able to keep the score close as Carnegie Mellon led 1-0 at the break. In the 31st minute, the Tartans tested Butler who made two saves around a blocked shot. Meanwhile the Tartan defense kept Geneva away from its offensive third of the field allowing no shots.

Geneva registered its first shot of the game in the 52nd minute when Jeb Nash's shot was wide following a counter attack by the Golden Tornadoes who charged forward after a Tartan corner kick.

The Tartans quickly regained possession which led to their second goal of the game. Junior Scott Gerfen (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) scored an unassisted goal in the 59th minute for his first of the season.

Junior goalkeeper Christopher Madden (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) earned the victory and his second shutout of the season making two saves with one coming in the 70th minute and one in the 89th.

The #7 Tartans return home after three road contests for a 1:00 p.m. match against Allegheny College on Saturday, September 15.
