#13 Tartans Topped by Baldwin Wallace

(ADA, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team took to the road Friday night in non-conference action at Ohio Northern University against Baldwin Wallace College. The #13 Tartans, who received the national ranking after two opening season wins, fell to Baldwin Wallace 5-3 moving their record to 2-1 overall while the Yellow Jackets are 1-1.

The score was knotted at 1-1 after the first half of play as the Yellow Jackets scored first in the 15th minute before the Tartans equalized in the 23rd minute. Junior Mike Ferraco (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) scored the equalizer for Carnegie Mellon when his shot deflected off a defender and found it's way past the keeper.

The Tartans peppered the net over the final 22 minutes of the period but Yellow Jacket keeper Tyler Beaton made save after save stopping five of the Cardinal and Gray's six shots. Junior Max Tassano (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion) had four shots saved by Beaton including back-to-back shots in the closing 15 seconds.

Baldwin Wallace regrouped at halftime and jumped on the Tartans from the whistle, scoring 29 seconds into the second period. Pat Brennan scored for the second time, as he dribbled down the right side and beat Carnegie Mellon sophomore keeper Christopher Madden (Reisterstown, Md./Calvert Hall) to his left. Just over two minutes later, Brennan connected with Ben Deighton who gave the Yellow Jackets a 3-1 lead with a shot to the upper right.

The Yellow Jackets continued to trouble the Tartans, earning a free kick just outside the 18-yard box in the 63rd minute. Deighton put the free kick in the back of the net for a 4-1 advantage.

The Tartans would get on the board again but not before Baldwin Wallace went ahead 5-1 in the 72nd minute on an unassisted goal by Bill Gamble. Sophomore Louis Ferragonio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) scored his first career goal a minute later off an assist by freshman Connor Webb.

Sophomore Daniel Kursman-Neri (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) finished the game's scoring with a goal in the 78th minute, making the score 5-3. Junior Cole Christensen (Castle Rock, Colo./Rock Canyon) registered the assist.

The Tartans had a few more opportunities in the final minutes but shots by Kursman-Neri and Christensen were wide.

Carnegie Mellon will face #4 Ohio Northern on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. to close the Ohio Northern Invitational.
