Lockwood Leads Tartans to 5-0 Win with Multi-point Outing

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) -  A pair of goals by freshman Tristan Lockwood (Victor, N.Y./Victor) and senior Max Tassano (Bala Cynwyd, Pa./Lower Merion) led the Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team in a 5-0 win over Bethany College on a rainy afternoon Saturday, September 21. The Tartans advance to 7-1 on the year while the Bison fall to 3-6.

Lockwood scored his first career goal on a rebound off a free kick by senior Ben Bryant (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills) in the 19th minute. Bryant's low driven kick bounced by a defender and was saved by Callum Appleby in goal but skipped right to Lockwood for the follow-up to the empty net.

Tassano's first score of the game came at the 21:33 mark off an assist by Lockwood. The freshman sent a low pass across the top of the 18-yard box where Tassano received it, took a touch back to center and fired a low shot to the right corner for the goal and 2-0 Tartan lead.

Five minutes later Lockwood struck again when senior Mike Ferraco (Penn Hills, Pa./Penn Hills) sent a driven cross from the left side to the far post along the goal line. Lockwood slid in and finished the shot for his second goal of the game.

In the 40th minute, Tassano gave the Tartans a 4-0 lead with a header at the back post off a cross by senior Jerome Reano (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy).

The Bison registered three shots on goal in the first period that were saved by senior Christopher Madden (Reisterstown,  Md./Calvert Hall).

Junior Jacob Rice (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) entered the game at goalie for the Tartans in the second half and made two saves while sophomore Eric Bykowsky (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) played the final 10 minutes to share in the team shutout.

The fifth and final goal for the Tartans was scored in the 60th minute when sophomore Louis Ferragonio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) put a pass to the left corner that Reano ran onto and sent back across the box. Senior Kevin Pierce (Dallas, Pa./Dallas Senior) was the recipient of the pass and finished to the empty net.

The Tartans have now recorded seven shutouts for the season and will play again on Saturday, September 28 at home against Grove City College at 4:30 p.m.
