Tartans Tie Rochester, 2-2

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team tied the University of Rochester, 2-2, in University Athletic Association (UAA) action on Friday, October 16. The Tartans are now 8-2-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the UAA.

The Tartans attacked early and in the seventh minute got on the board when freshman Sean MacPherson (Palo Alto, Calif./Gunn) scored his first career goal after picking up a defender deflection and beating the keeper high and in the corner.

Three minutes later, the Tartans struck again when junior Tristan Lockwood (Fairport, N.Y./Victor) played a long ball forward that freshman Philip Petrakian (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Preparatory) ran onto and touched to his left a few times around a defender before lofting a shot to the opposite post for the Tartans' 2-0 lead.

Rochester's best opportunity of the half came early in the 44th minute when Jeff Greblick fired a shot just wide of the post.

In the final minute of the first half, senior William Webb (Dallas, Texas/J.J. Pearce) riffled a shot in the run of play from 25 yards out that caught Rochester keeper Redd Brown off guard, but he tipped it high and then secured the rebound to keep the score 2-0 in favor of the Tartans.

Rochester cut the deficit in half in the second minute of the second half when Tyler Buck scored off a diving header following a corner kick to the far post by Alex Di Perna.

With 14 minutes to play, Rochester earned another corner kick and again found the back of the net to equalize. This time, Michael Sergeant was the goal scorer as he finished a rebound that was saved by a defender at the post.

In overtime, the Tartans nearly scored the game winner when freshman Zach Masciopinto's (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) bicycle kick was saved by Brown at the post.

The Tartans will next face Emory University on Sunday, October 18 at 1:30 p.m. at home.
