Tartans Shutout Third Straight Opponent Defeating Catholic 2-0

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team completed play at the CMU DoubleTree Showcase on Sunday, September 11 with a 2-0 victory over the Cardinals of Catholic University. The win keeps the Tartans perfect on the year as they move to 4-0 while Catholic is now 2-3.

Carnegie Mellon wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Sophomore Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) took a pass from sophomore Mike Lin (San Diego, Calif./Canyon Crest Academy) and finished striking the ball to the top right corner of the net to give the home team the early 1-0 lead 70 seconds into play.

The Tartans second goal of the game came in the 25th-minute of play when freshman Alex Dziadosz (Boxford, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) scored his first collegiate goal. Dziadosz headed the cross ball from sophomore Philip Petrakian (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Preparatory) past the Cardianls keeper to put Carnegie Mellon ahead 2-0.

Catholic opened the second half recording the first five shots including two on goal that were saved by Tartan freshman keeper Jack Sampiere (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines).  Sampiere recorded his second win of the season in next after making four saves while Steven Lukas made six saves for Catholic.

Carnegie Mellon will be back on the field Friday, September 16 when they travel to Westminster for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
