#8 Tartans Fall to Brandeis, 1-0

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team hosted Brandeis University for a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest on Saturday, October 6 with the Judges earning a 1-0 victory. The Tartans are now 8-1-2 for the season and 1-1 in UAA play while the Judges move to 6-4-1 and 1-0-1.

Senior keeper Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / Northern Highlands Regional) made three saves in the first six minutes to stifle the Brandeis offense early. Junior Jack Painter (Bethlehem, Pa. / Moravian Academy) had an opportunity in the late seconds of the seventh minute but his shot from just inside the 18-yard box was blocked by a Brandeis defender.

In the 17th minute, senior Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill. / St. Joseph) fired a free kick on frame that Greg Irwin smothered before a Tartan foot could put it in. Lam made another save in the 18th minute for the Tartans before action stayed between the boxes until the 37th minute.

Brandeis' Devan Casey picked up the ball off a Tartan defender about 50 yards from the goal. He turned, dribbled into space and struck a shot from 20 yards out across his body to the left corner for the score.

In the second half, the Tartans were on the attack early with Gulli forcing a save by Irwin in the 47th minute. Gulli had a shot punched over the bar in the 60th minute before sophomore Jordi Long (Silver Spring, Md. / Montgomery Blair) had a shot stopped in the 62nd minute.

In the 81st minute, junior Elliot Cohen (Solana Beach, Calif. / Canyon Crest Academy) was fouled just outside the box and center of the field. His free kick curved to the right and ricocheted off the corner post and out of bounds.

The Tartans will next face University of Chicago when the Maroons visit Pittsburgh for a 5:00 p.m. match on Friday, October 12.
