Provisional Times Lead Tartans at Top Performance Invitational

(GAMBIER, Ohio) – The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming team was led by five NCAA provisional qualifying times as the team finished fourth at the Top Performance Invitational hosted by Kenyon College from Thursday, December 1 through Saturday, December 3. Finishing ahead of the Tartans was University of Pennsylvania, Kenyon, and Davidson College.

Junior Dan Glaser-Garbrick (Dayton, Ohio/Centreville) recorded a career-best finish in the 400-yard IM when he touched third in the final with a provisional mark of 4:00.74. He also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 200-yard butterfly, an event he also finished third in, with a time of 1:51.06. Other top finishes for Glaser-Garbrick came in the 100-yard butterfly where he finished ninth in 50.70 and the 200-yard IM where he finished 14th in 1:56.33.

Sophomore Austin Bohn (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona) finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a career-best and provisional qualifying time of 2:05.68 and did the same in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 57.58, finishing fifth.

Freshman Andrew Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 16:10.96 and finished eighth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:44.33, making the finals in 4:40.67. Yee also swam in the finals of the 400-yard IM where he finished 10th overall in 4:08.37 and the 200-yard IM where he finished 21st in 1:58.56. He made a fourth appearance in the evening session with a 13th-place showing in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:43.82.

Freshman Anton Razanav (San Diego, Calif./Westview) had two championship heat finishes as he touched sixth in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:55.91, reaching the finals in 1:54.00, and eighth in the 100-yard backstroke in 52.46, reaching the finals in 51.93.

Junior Brandon Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) had a seventh-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:54.02 as freshman David Campbell (Vorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) finished ninth in the same event in 1:55.06. Sophomore Eddie Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) won the consolation finals of the 100-yard freestyle in 47.02, reaching the finals in 46.77, and finished 11th in the 50-yard freestyle in 21.39.

Campbell also swam in the evening session for the 400-yard IM and 500-yard freestyle where he placed 12th (4:09.24) and 15th (4:45.64), respectively.

Freshman Cole Um (Federal Way, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) reached the bonus final of the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststrokes, touching 18th in the 100-yard event in 1:00.25 and 19th in the 200-yard event in 2:11.79.

Also recording top finishes were senior Matt Stanton (Richboro, Pa./Council) in the 100-yard backstroke (12th place, 53.63), freshman Michael Kellman (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) in the 100-yard backstroke (14th, 54.09) and the 200-yard backstroke (11th, 1:55.61) and sophomore Terrence Wong (Solon, Ohio) in the 100-yard butterfly (14th, 52.18).

The team recorded season bests in all five relays as the 400-yard freestyle relay finished fourth and the 400-yard medley relay finished fifth. Sears, Bohn, senior Adam Wagner (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) and Stanton swam the 400-yard freestyle relay to a time of 3:07.28 while Razanav, Bohn, Glaser-Garbrick and Stanton finished the medley relay in 3:27.55.

The Tartans will be off from team competition until second semester when they travel to Westminster College for a 1:00 p.m. meet on Saturday, January 21.
