Tartans Win Big in Double Dual with Grove City and Rochester

(PITTSBURGH, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team hosted Grove City College and the University of Rochester on Saturday, November 8 and recorded two wins to improve its dual meet record to 4-0. The Tartans won 12 individual events for the day and topped Grove City 232-62 and Rochester 214.5-73.5.

The team started the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, recording another season-best time of 1:34.39, behind the performance from senior Josh Lucheon (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic), freshman Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), sophomore Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) and sophomore Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga).

The 1,000-yard freestyle was won by freshman Josh Taekman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) in 9:59.51 as freshman Alex Glidden (Peabody, Mass./St. John's Prep) placed second in 10:13.51. Junior Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.23 while senior Andrew Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) was second in 1:46.36.

Yee later returned to the water to win the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.62, just ahead of Taekman who touched in 4:48.63. Glidden finished the distance freestyle third in 4:53.94.

Mehta continued his dominance in the 100-yard backstroke, winning for the second week with a season-best time of 52.93.

Chu picked up a win in the 100-yard breaststroke, touching first in a team-best 58.55. Sophomore Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) won the 200-yard butterfly for the second time this year with a season-best time of 1:54.45 and then recorded a season-best time in the 100-yard butterfly, touching first in 51.50.

The 200-yard backstroke ended in a tie as freshman Michael DiBacco (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) touched in 1:57.54 along with James Frauen from Rochester.

The Tartans swept the 200-yard breaststroke with junior Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) leading the way in 2:11.47. Jay was second in 2:14.61 with Chu touching third in 2:15.20.

Nielsen picked up a second win in the 200-yard IM, finishing in 1:57.77 ahead of sophomore Jay Jin (Canton, Mich./Canton) in 1:58.35 and senior Roy Sung (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) in 2:01.99.

The Tartans closed the meet with a victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Jay, Taekman, Mehta and freshman Kevin Steinhouse (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) finished the race in 1:26.87.

In diving, freshman Noah Fatsi (Midlothian, Va./Trinity Episcopal) placed second on the three-meter board with 137.15 points and second on the one-meter board with 247.25 points. Both scores were career bests for Fatsi.

The Tartans will be back in action on Saturday, November 15 when they host Washington and Lee University and Allegheny College at 11:30 a.m.
